Eczema linked to heart disease
Adults with eczema have an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. Both the condition and the unhealthy habits can affect this risk. “Eczema affects all aspects of one’s life and can therefore worsen the health of the heart.” says researcher Jonathan Silverberg of the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.
The study of Silverberg found out that people with eczema smoke more, drink more, are more often overweight and exercise less than people without this skin disorder. In addition, the results of the study suggest that eczema itself increases the risk of heart disease or stroke.
No causal link
“It is fascinating that even after controlling the factors living style the link between eczema and heart disease remained detectable,” says Silverberg. The researcher emphasized that his study does not show causation. The research is published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. The data of more than 61,000 adults between eighteen and 85 years are used.
